Mocromafia murdered lawyer: “Attack on lawyer is attack on the rule of law”
From politics to the judiciary, there was a shocked reaction to the murder of Amsterdam lawyer Derk Wiersum on Wednesday in Amsterdam. The 44-year-old Wiersum assisted crown witness Nabil B. in the liquidation case concerning the fugitive chief suspect Ridouan T. It is widely assumed that the attack is related to this lawsuit. Earlier, the brother of the crown witness was murdered in Amsterdam-Noord.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister Sander Dekker (Legal Protection) call the liquidation of a lawyer of a crown witness “very disturbing”. Femke Halsema, mayor of Amsterdam, speaks of “an unprecedented attack on the legal profession that affects the essence of the rule of law”. The Lower House wants a debate with Minister of Justice Ferd Grapperhaus about the attack soon. Among other things, she wants to know whether justice has done enough to protect legal counsel. The Amsterdam city council also wants a debate soon: the murder of a lawyer is “a new low in the series of liquidations in the city”.
